Oxid Capture Studio vs CleanShot X vs Screen Studio: which Mac screen recorder fits?

CleanShot X vs Screen Studio vs Oxid Capture Studio: a full toolkit, polished demo videos on a subscription, or a one-time-purchase screen recorder.

Facts about other products checked October 2, 2026, with sources linked. Something out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.

All three are Mac apps for capturing what’s on your screen, but they’re aimed at different jobs. CleanShot X is a large screenshot and recording toolkit with cloud sharing. Screen Studio is built for polished product demos and tutorials, with automatic zooms and a smoothed cursor. Oxid Capture Studio sits between them: it takes screenshots (including scrolling captures) and records the screen through Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit to H.264 MP4, then lets you mark up a screenshot or edit a recording in the same app, all run from the menu bar. It has no cloud upload and no automatic zooms.

Short version: CleanShot X does more than Oxid Capture Studio and costs a little less, so if you want text recognition, cloud links, click and keystroke overlays or automatic zooms, choose it. If you make demo videos and want them to look produced with little effort, Screen Studio is built for that, but it’s now subscription-only. Oxid Capture Studio makes sense if you want screenshots, recording, annotation and a basic video editor in one app for a one-time price, with everything kept on your Mac, or you’re buying the Oxid Value Pack anyway.

“Not listed” means the feature isn’t on that app’s feature list or the page we checked, not that we tested it and found it missing.

CleanShot X: the bigger toolkit

CleanShot X covers a lot of ground. Its features page lists screenshots of an area, window or the full screen, scrolling capture in both directions, recording to MP4 or GIF with microphone and computer audio, click and keystroke overlays, a camera overlay, a full set of annotation tools, on-device text recognition and QR reading, pinned floating screenshots, a desktop-hiding option for clean recordings, and one-click cloud upload with password-protected and self-destructing links. It also lists Smart Zooms and a smoothed cursor for tutorial videos.

It’s also cheaper than Oxid Capture Studio at $35, it needs macOS 13 or newer, and it’s available through Setapp. Oxid Capture Studio overlaps with a lot of it (area, window, full-screen and scrolling screenshots, recording with audio, annotation, pinned screenshots), but it has no text recognition, no cloud links, no click or keystroke overlays and no automatic zooms. If you need any of those, CleanShot X is the better choice.

Screen Studio: polished demo videos

Screen Studio is built for one thing: making screen recordings look produced. It watches what you did while recording, such as where you clicked, and adds zooms automatically, smooths the cursor, records system and microphone audio, and adds your webcam in a choice of layouts. It also offers editing by transcript, removal of filler words and pauses, captions, device frames for iPhone and iPad recordings, and shareable links.

Oxid Capture Studio’s video editor can add zoom and pan, spotlights, typed subtitles and transitions, but you place each one by hand, and it has no cursor smoothing, transcript editing or automatic captions. If the automatic, finished look is what you need, Screen Studio does that and Oxid Capture Studio doesn’t. The catch is the price model: Screen Studio is $29 a month, or $9 a month billed yearly, and its FAQ says buying a one-time licence “is no longer available for new purchases.”

What Oxid Capture Studio offers

Oxid Capture Studio covers screenshots, recording and editing in one app:

  • Screenshots of the full screen, a window, a region or a scrolling page, plus a 5-second timed capture, saved as PNG or JPEG. You can pin a screenshot on screen.
  • Recording through Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit to H.264 MP4 at 30, 60 or 120 fps, with system audio, the microphone or both, and the webcam alone or as a layer over the screen.
  • An annotation editor with arrows, lines, shapes, a pen, a highlighter, text, callouts, numbered steps, blur, magnify and crop.
  • A video editor that trims, splits and changes speed, and adds zoom and pan, blurred regions, spotlights, typed subtitles and transitions.
  • Export presets for YouTube, social and GIF, plus custom export to H.264, HEVC, ProRes or VP9. An LGPL build of FFmpeg ships inside the app, so there’s nothing extra to install.
  • Auto Save writes the recording to disk while it runs, every minute by default, so a crash costs at most the last stretch. Nothing before the first save can be recovered.
  • A menu-bar workflow. It’s a universal app for Apple silicon and Intel; capture needs macOS 14 or later.

There’s no cloud upload and no sharing link: screenshots and recordings are saved on your Mac. You pay once, and the price includes both editors.

Price

  • CleanShot X Basic is $35 once, including one year of updates and 1 GB of cloud storage. Renewing updates after that is an optional $19 a year. CleanShot Pro is $10 per user per month, billed annually, with unlimited cloud storage and team features. It’s also in Setapp.
  • Screen Studio is $29 a month, or $9 a month on the yearly plan. New buyers can’t get a one-time licence.
  • Oxid Capture Studio is $39 once, with a 7-day free trial. One licence covers one Mac. It’s also part of the $99 Oxid Value Pack, which includes 12 apps.

Over a year, Screen Studio’s yearly plan comes to $108, so either one-time app costs less than a single year of it. Between the two one-time apps, CleanShot X is the cheaper one.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose CleanShot X if you want the widest set of screenshot and recording tools, cloud links, text recognition, click and keystroke overlays or automatic zooms, at a slightly lower price.
  • Choose Screen Studio if you make product demos or tutorials and want automatic zooms, a smooth cursor, webcam layouts and transcript editing, and you’re happy to pay a subscription.
  • Choose Oxid Capture Studio if you want screenshots (including scrolling ones), recording with system audio and microphone, annotation and a hands-on video editor in one menu-bar app, with files kept on your Mac, for a one-time price, or you’re getting the Oxid Value Pack.
